Beginner’s Theater Make-Up Class Haul

Let me just tell you, today has been awesome! I had a great night’s sleep, had an awesome dream, woke up feeling refreshed and energized, ate some delicious pancakes, went shopping, had AppleBee’s for dinner and came home to blog about it. 🙂

Anyway, the reason we went shopping today was because I needed supplies for my new Beginner’s Theater Make-Up class. I didn’t even know colleges gave this course! If you go to a community college and want to study make-up but don’t have a lot of money, you should definitely check if your college has a theater make-up class. I had to pay nothing for the class. Zero, Zilch, Nada! The only thing I had to pay for were the supplies and that’s pretty average for any schooling. I am going to show what I got, how it’s used in actual theater, and what we are probably going to be doing with it in class. Let’s start with the pictures!

So this is what the box looks like. It looks small, but they packed this small box with a lot of products. Now when I was doing research for prices, some places sold the kit for $80 dollars which is A LOT of money for a small beginner’s kit. The prices varied from $80 to $60 dollars so I was really worried about spending a lot of money on this thing but, the place that we went to was SUPER cheap. The store I went to was Naimie’s Beauty Center. It was the closest beauty store that sold theater make-up so I just went there. I am so happy I did. The store helped find what I was looking for… sorta, but I’ll get back to that later. When I paid, the asked me why I needed the kit and when I told them for a class, they gave me a student discount on the spot! 😀 So instead of paying 55 dollars for the kit they sold, I only paid $44.33!!! Sweet right?? I am definitely going to be shopping there for my special effects make-up needs.

ANYWAY!! Let’s see what’s in the kit, shall we?

 

This is really nothing, but in the kit you get some cosmetic sponges for applying the foundation and blending in colors, a giant soft puff to apply powders, a small texture sponge (the small black thing on the puff), a brow and lash comb,and some cosmetic Q-tips. I believe the sponge is for adding texture to wax or latex. A classmate said he saw guys adding texture to a fake beard so that will be useful. Now I know some people will think, “Q-tips? Really?” But they are a super tool that you NEED in your make-up kit. If you make a mistake on your eye liner, you can use the pointed end to straighten the edge or if your concealer is creasing in the fine lines, you can gently dab the dome end to pick up the extra product.

 

Now these three pots are the most important piece of the kit. These are the foundation colors. In each set you get three colors. You want to make sure that the middle shade matches your skin tone. That way, the darker shade is contour, and the lighter shade is highlight. These foundations look like they are children’s make-up but they are super creamy, super pigmented, and easily blended. I was lucky to have a lady match my color, but if you are having trouble, just buy one that is close enough to your skin tone, then use the other colors to mix and match until you have the perfect color!

This is the Creme Contour Wheel. You get four colors which are all used to contour, define, and to add color. You get a creme contour shade, two blushes, and  black creme color which is used for defining. The pictures give the blush colors no justice at all. One is a dusty rose color(top left) and the other is a peachy pink tone blush(bottom left). Both are super pigments so I’ll have to be careful when applying them. Now that I’m typing everything down, I’m noticing that there are a lot of things that can be used as contour shades. Oh well I guess. ONWARDS!

This is actually a fun wheel to mess with. This is the FX Color Wheel for creating Bruises and Abrasions. When I was in Drama back in high school, a friend bought this to school and we were all messing with the colors, I gave myself a black eye and when I was walking in the hallways after class, I actually got stopped by a few teachers asking me if it I was getting bullied or anything. I was laughing while I smeared the creme so that they could see that it was just make-up. Sorry for drifting off! Here you have a 4-color wheel with a red color, a bright yellow color, a dark blue, and a purple color. When you layer these colors and blend, you can create very believable bruises and if you want to go a step further, you can add latex into the make-up and make your skin look bloody and swollen. Cool huh? I can’t wait to use this in class.

 

These are four little color pots for you to use. The dark brown shade (top left) is a “Character Definer” or a contour shade so you can add depth (see there’s another contour shade!), a nude tone shade (top right) which is actually very photogenic. It appears white in the picture but it’s actually a peach color. It’s labeled “Highlight” and that’s exactly what it does. On the bottom right is a white creme face paint. It is, however extremely thick, so I recommend mixing it with light foundation to make it easier to blend in to the skin and also so that you don’t waste as much. On the bottom left is actually a powder blush in a pinkish rose color. It’s super pigmented and very easy to blend in.

Next up is a small jar of Liquid Latex. Now this product is going to be your new best friend. You can do sooooooooo many things with liquid latex. You can also USE many things with liquid latex. I’ve seen a guy create scars and bumps on his face by adding tissues into some liquid latex. You can use it as adhesive, to create small details, as well and smoothing out the edges on a silicone prosthetic. Oh but it does smell really bad so I feel sorry for the people who have to apply it all over their face.

This is your second best friend, Nose and Scar Wax. Pair this up with the latex and you can go far my friends. You can create scars, give your nose a new shape, add texture into a fantasy make-up (i.e. alien, monster, bestial). I can not wait until we use this in class. I’ll definitely go crazy and probably make myself look like Edward Scissorhand with all the scars I’ll have on my face.

 

This is just some translucent setting powder so that your creme foundation doesn’t slip and slide while your applying any of your other make-up. Translucent means it’s basically a powder that’s “clear”? I don’t know how to explain it other than it matches any skin tone. It comes in a cute salt shaker bottle.

 

These two go hand in hand together. First you have the small jar which is Spirit Gum. It’s used as the adhesive in make-up. You can use to stick wax, prosthetics, and other materials onto your face. It’s very strong so be careful when applying this. Make sure you have an even layer. The bigger bottle is just special soap to make removing the Spirit Gum easier.

 

I am not sure what this is used for actually. It says “Snow White Hair Color” so I’m guessing if you are ever doing old age make-up, you can brush a small amount through your hair to add old grey hair.

 

You also get a small bottle of fake blood in kit! Awesome! I wasn’t expecting this but now if I ever need to do a zombie/vampire/monster make-up with blood, I am set! 🙂

In the kit, you also get 3 pencils. One is a lip liner, the other are brow pencils. I actually consider the black to be an eye liner because almost no one has natural black eye brows. They are usually just a dark brown color. Black would be too harsh as a brow color so I’ll probably just be using it as a liner. The lip liner is a pretty pink rose. Very versatile as well, you could probably use it under a tone of colors. I’m pretty sure you could tone down red lipstick with the cool pink underneath. The brown brow pencil is pretty much just that, a brown brow pencil. The lip liner is creamy, but the other pencils have a slight drag on the skin and that’s one thing I don’t like.

 

That’s it for the kit. I did also get 2 small brushes but I some how forgot to take pictures of them so… yeah. I did also buy 3 other products other than the kit so let me show you right now!

This is the Ben Nye Contour shade in D-01. See!? Contour again! It’s not like I want all these contour shades, it’s just that my teacher said we need this one. It’s completely matte and has a very soft finish. It also blends like it’s nobodies business as well. That’s it for all the make-up now and whew! I am tired!

Last two things are just brushes. Nothing fancy just a soft large shadow brush and a large detail brush. That’s it.
